The yellowhead jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) is a Caribbean member of the family Opistognathidae. It ranges through the western central Atlantic from southern Florida and the Bahamas to Barbados and northern South America, living at 3-40 m in burrows it excavates from crushed coral and sand on rubble-strewn bottoms. The head is yellow and the body pale blue-green; maximum total length is about 10 cm. It forms monogamous pairs and the male incubates the sticky ball of eggs in his mouth. Care is of moderate difficulty. Provide a tank of 114 L or more with a 13-18 cm bed of mixed-grade sand and rubble so it can dig a stable burrow. A gap-free lid is essential, as it launches itself out of the tank when startled. A shy feeder that prefers small food drifting near its burrow, it should be offered frozen mysis, brine shrimp and chopped mussel delivered close to the burrow. Keep it with docile fish and avoid boisterous feeders or fish that disturb the substrate. It has been bred in captivity and captive-bred fish exist.
