Yellow tang
Iconic marine fish with brilliant all-yellow body. Eats algae, serving as tank cleaner. Hardy and long-lived.
The yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is a surgeonfish of the family Acanthuridae inhabiting coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean. Uniformly brilliant yellow throughout its life, it is one of the most widely recognized and popular marine aquarium fish. Like all surgeonfish, it possesses a sharp spine (scalpel) on the caudal peduncle used for defense and territorial disputes. Strongly herbivorous, it grazes algae from live rock and tank walls, contributing to aquarium hygiene. Adults reach approximately 20 cm; a spacious tank of 200 litres or more is recommended. Conspecific aggression can occur, though mixing with other tang species is generally manageable with adequate space.
