The strawberry conch (Conomurex luhuanus, formerly Strombus luhuanus) is a gastropod of sandy and reef bottoms in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean, popular as a sand-cleaning snail in marine aquariums. It has a thick, glossy shell with an orange-to-red aperture, two distinctive eye stalks, and a long mobile proboscis whose unusual movements are fun to watch. Crawling over the substrate, it uses its long proboscis to sift sand and eat leftover food, detritus, and surface diatoms, keeping the sand bed clean. Because it does not violently stir up the sand, it is ideal for tanks with a sand bed. Peaceful and reef-safe, it does no harm to corals or fish. Keep it at 24-27°C and 1.023-1.026 specific gravity, and drip-acclimate it carefully. In a bare-bottom tank it tends to starve, so always keep it with a sand substrate. Avoid copper-based fish medications, to which it is sensitive.
