Small colorful marine fish. Royal Dottyback is popular. Feisty but small size limits damage potential.
Dottybacks (family Pseudochromidae) are a diverse group of small marine fishes found primarily on coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, comprising approximately 152 species. Popular aquarium species include the royal dottyback (purple), orchid dottyback (purple), and bicolor dottyback (purple and yellow), all valued for their intense, vivid coloration. Small in stature at 5–8 cm, they can be maintained in aquariums as small as 60 litres, and most adapt readily to prepared foods. However, their notably feisty, territorial temperament means they will readily attack smaller or less assertive tankmates. Providing multiple hiding spots and selecting compatible, similarly sized or more assertive tank companions is key to successful keeping.
