Acanthurus leucosternon
Beautiful pale blue body with black face and yellow dorsal. Indian Ocean tang. Prone to ich — water quality is critical.
The powder blue tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is a surgeonfish of the family Acanthuridae endemic to the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean. Its powdery, pastel-blue body complemented by a jet-black face, bright yellow dorsal fin, and white chest creates a harmonious color scheme that places it among the most visually refined of all surgeonfishes. Adults reach approximately 25 cm; a spacious tank of 300 litres or more and consistently high water quality are mandatory. This species is particularly sensitive to water quality fluctuations and highly susceptible to Cryptocaryon irritans (marine ich), placing it firmly in the intermediate-to-advanced care category. Strong territorial aggression toward conspecifics and related tangs makes solitary keeping standard practice. Its vigorous, constant swimming demands ample open space.
