About
The flame hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus) is a small hawkfish from central and western Pacific reefs, unmistakable in fiery red with a black line along the back. Adults reach 8-10 cm. Like all hawkfish it has a reduced swim bladder and, rather than swimming continuously, perches on branching coral or rock on its pectoral fins and watches its surroundings. This species particularly favours the gaps between Acropora branches, which makes it a rewarding reef-tank fish. It is hardy and easy to feed, but decidedly predatory: it will take small shrimp — juvenile skunk cleaners, peppermint shrimp — and small fish, so plan invertebrate tankmates carefully. It does not harm corals themselves.
