Pholidichthys leucotaenia
A goby with fascinating tunnel-digging behavior. Groups build complex burrow systems in sand.
The engineer goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia) is an elongated marine fish of the family Pholidichthyidae found on reef and rubble substrate in the western Pacific Ocean. Juveniles display bold yellow-and-black banding that mimics venomous sea snakes for protection, while adults develop a pattern of white longitudinal stripes — a striking ontogenetic transformation. True to its common name, the species is an inveterate burrower, excavating complex tunnel networks through the sandy substrate. Groups kept together construct impressive communal burrow systems, providing endlessly fascinating viewing. A deep sand bed of at least 10 cm is mandatory for natural burrowing behavior. Adults can reach 20–30 cm; a 90-litre or larger aquarium is recommended. Omnivorous and robust, it readily accepts a wide variety of prepared foods.
