Silver Arowana

A large osteoglossid from the Amazon basin. Its elongate silver body carries big reflective scales and it cruises just under the surface. Adults reach 90cm, so a very large tank and a secure lid are essential.

About
Osteoglossum bicirrhosum occurs in the Amazon basin and the Rupununi and Oyapock rivers. It reaches 90cm TL and 6kg, with large silvery scales, a pair of barbels on the lower jaw and long dorsal and anal fins running to the rear of the body. It patrols just under the surface, taking insects and small fish. FishBase gives 24-30C and Seriously Fish pH 5.0-7.5 and 2-15 dGH, so it tolerates a wide range of water chemistry, but adults need public-aquarium scale housing. Juveniles take bloodworm, small earthworms and chopped prawn; adults take fish flesh, whole prawns and mussels. Mammalian and avian meat should be avoided. Males mouthbrood the eggs and fry for roughly two months, with typical broods of 12-30. Breeding is unrecorded in home aquaria and most trade fish come from South American pond farms.
