Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum is a large pimelodid from the Amazon, Corantijn, Essequibo, Orinoco and Parana basins; FishBase gives 105cm SL and 70kg. Black bars cross a silvery body, and the fish has a long flattened snout and three pairs of long barbels. Seriously Fish gives 22-26C, pH 6.0-7.6 and 2-30 degrees hardness, with a preference for slightly acidic water, and 360 x 240 x 120cm - about 10,368 litres - as the minimum for a full-grown specimen. Naturally piscivorous, it accepts prawns, mussels, cockle, lancefish, earthworms and fish fillet; mammalian meat and feeder fish should be avoided. Juveniles are fed every other day, adults about once a week. It is fairly peaceful with fish of similar size but eats smaller ones and is territorial towards conspecifics and other large catfishes. In the wild it migrates long distances to spawn, and reproduction is unreported in the hobby.
