Geophagus steindachneri, the redhump eartheater, occurs in the Magdalena, Cauca and Sinú basins of Colombia and the Río Limón (Lake Maracaibo drainage) in Venezuela (FishBase). It reaches 19.8 cm TL. Mature males develop the large red nuchal hump that gives the fish its name. It prefers sandy forest streams, tributaries and backwaters, taking mouthfuls of sand and sifting out small invertebrates, seeds and detritus through the gills. Females are mouthbrooders, and free-swimming fry return to the mother's mouth for some time when threatened; males may spawn with several females. Colour forms vary by locality, and fish are sometimes sold under the old name Geophagus hondae. Distinct from G. altifrons and 'G.' brasiliensis, it gives its name to the 'G.' steindachneri group of related species. In Japan it is found in shops specialising in South American cichlids.
