Tropheus duboisi
A Tropheus from the rocky northern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Juveniles are black with white spots; adults develop a blue face and a yellow-to-white band. A largely herbivorous algae grazer.
Tropheus duboisi is a cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, with a patchy distribution in the northern part of the lake. It lives on the upper rocky habitat grazing algae from rocks, down to about 30 m, deeper than its congeners. FishBase gives a maximum of 12 cm TL. Juveniles are black with white spots and very popular; adults develop a blue head and a yellow-to-white mid-body band. It is a maternal mouthbrooder with small broods of 5-15 eggs. It needs hard, alkaline water and is sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Because conspecific fighting can be lethal in small groups, it is usually kept in groups of 15-20, which requires a large tank. The diet must be mainly plant-based; mammalian meat upsets its digestion. It was assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List in 2025. In Japan juveniles are sold by African cichlid specialists.

24〜26℃
Mainly herbivorous (spirulina and other plant-based foods)
24-26°C, pH 8.5-9.0, 10-12 dH (FishBase). Keep hard, alkaline water; it is very sensitive to poor water quality, so filtration and water changes are essential.
FishBase recommends one male with many females in a tank of at least 150 cm. Build rock piles on sand with plenty of hiding places and open swimming space.
Fairly peaceful to other species but fights conspecifics. Groups of 5-6 rarely settle; 15-20 is usual. Newcomers added to an established group are not tolerated.
Base the diet on plant matter such as spirulina foods and blanched vegetables, with only small amounts of frozen food. Never feed mammalian meat.
The female mouthbroods 5-15 eggs for over four weeks before releasing fry. Stress can make her spit or eat the brood, so avoid moving brooding females.
Sexing is difficult. It readily falls ill from poor water or unsuitable food and is not a beginner's fish.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The ideal temperature for White-spotted cichlid is 24〜26℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
White-spotted cichlid typically reaches Up to 12 cm TL (FishBase) as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
