Beautiful fish from Australia/New Guinea that shine rainbow colors in morning light. Spectacular in schools.
Rainbowfishes (family Melanotaeniidae) are small to medium-sized freshwater fish found in northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, Sulawesi, and Madagascar, encompassing numerous species of considerable variety. Well-known aquarium species include Boeseman's rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani), the neon dwarf rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox), and the threadfin rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri). Adults range from 5 to 15 cm depending on species. Their hallmark is spectacular iridescent coloration — many species show sharply contrasting front and rear body colors that shift and intensify in different lighting, appearing to radiate a rainbow of hues. The 'morning flashing' behavior — in which males display to rivals and females with maximum color intensity — is one of the most dramatic daily events in the aquarium. Most species prefer slightly alkaline water (pH 7.0–8.0) at 24–28°C. Active, open-water swimmers, they require tanks of 60 cm or more. Peaceful and compatible with most tropical fish, they thrive on a varied diet of quality flakes, granules, and occasional frozen foods.
