About
Hoplisoma julii is a small callichthyid catfish from the lower Amazon and the coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil, moved out of Corydoras julii in the 2024 generic revision. FishBase records 5.2cm standard length and Seriously Fish gives 50-55mm. Fine dark spots are scattered densely over a pale body, with a dark stripe along the midline. Seriously Fish notes that many fish traded under this name are in fact Hoplisoma trilineatum from the upper Amazon, where ornamental collection is more frequent. The two are traditionally told apart by the head pattern, small discrete spots in this species against vermiform markings in the other, but some of the latter are spotted too, so the character is not reliable. Aquarium conditions are 20-26C, pH 5.5-7.5 and 2-12dGH, with a 90 x 30cm base of about 81 litres. It is peaceful and gregarious and should be kept in groups of at least four to six. The IUCN Red List assesses it as Least Concern.
