Dendrobates leucomelas is a poison dart frog of northern South America, centred on Venezuela and reaching Guyana, northern Brazil and easternmost Colombia. Snout-vent length is 3.1-5 cm, though adults rarely exceed 4 cm, making it one of the larger Dendrobates. Its aposematic pattern is broad black banding or spotting on bright yellow, occasionally orange. Its habitat stays at 26-30 C with little seasonal variation, from sea level to 800 m, and it is the only poison dart frog known to aestivate during dry spells. Frogs have lived well over 20 years under ideal conditions, with about 10 years more typical. Because it copes with warmth and lower humidity better than its relatives and is bold in the terrarium, it is widely recommended as a first poison dart frog.
