Callionymus pusillus
A semi-aquatic lizard with distinctive sail-like dorsal crest. Impressive large species from Philippines.
Sailfin lizards (Hydrosaurus species) are large, semi-aquatic agamids native to the Philippines and Indonesia, particularly Sulawesi and surrounding islands. Adults can reach 80–100 cm in total length. The most distinctive feature is the tall, sail-like crest running from the base of the tail, which is particularly pronounced in males. This crest aids in thermoregulation, sexual display, and propulsion through water. Sailfin lizards are notable for their ability to run bipedally across water surfaces — a trait shared with basilisks. They are omnivorous, consuming plant matter, insects, and small animals. In captivity they require large enclosures of at least 150 cm with an accessible water area, strong UVB lighting, temperatures of 28–32°C, and high humidity.
