The African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) is a large frog of the savannas and grasslands of central and southern Africa, so imposing it is nicknamed the sumo of frogs. It has a robust olive-to-greenish body, a broad head with a very wide mouth, and raised longitudinal skin ridges along the back. Males grow far larger than females, typically 12-20 cm but occasionally exceeding 24 cm and 1.4 kg. It is famous for burrowing and forming a cocoon to aestivate through the dry season. Keep it singly with deep substrate for burrowing and a permanent shallow water area at 24-30°C; it is a voracious eater prone to obesity, and its powerful bite warrants care. It is cannibalistic and cannot be cohabited. Note that it is a different species from the regulated American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) and is legal to keep in Japan.
