The Panther Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a serranid found on coral reefs of the western Pacific from southern Japan to Palau, New Caledonia and Queensland, and in the eastern Indian Ocean. It favours lagoons, seaward reefs and silty areas at 2-40m. Its small head, high humped back and white body with black spots are unmistakable, and the large-spotted juveniles are popular aquarium fish. Growth is slow, but it reaches 70cm and swallows small fish and crustaceans whole. Keep at 22-26C, pH 8.1-8.4 and SG 1.021-1.023; adults need a tank of 1,100L or more. It eats heavily and fouls water, so strong filtration and flow are essential. Any fish or shrimp that fits in its mouth will be eaten, and groupers fight each other, so one per tank is the rule. It is farmed in Taiwan and Indonesia, but captive breeding is difficult and output limited. IUCN lists it as Data Deficient.
