The Niger Triggerfish (Odonus niger) is a balistid ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Marquesas and north to southern Japan. It schools in current-swept reef channels and slopes at 5-110m, feeding on zooplankton and sponges. Colour varies between individuals and from day to day, shifting from purple through blue to blue-green, with bright blue fin margins and long caudal lobes. Adults have the red teeth that give the fish its English name Redtoothed Triggerfish. It reaches 50cm but is relatively mild for a trigger, and grunts when alarmed. Keep at 22-26C, pH 8.1-8.4 and SG 1.020-1.025 in 680L or more. Hardy and quick to feed, it is considered a beginner trigger, but needs hard foods such as shell-on shrimp and clams to wear down its ever-growing teeth. It moves rockwork and eats shrimp and crabs, so house it in a large fish-only tank. No captive breeding is known. IUCN: Least Concern.
