Prosopocoilus sericeus
A Sundaland saw stag from Borneo, Sumatra and Java. The epithet sericeus refers to a silky sheen. The nominate form and the Malay Peninsula subspecies taronii are recognised, but almost no captive breeding reports exist.
Prosopocoilus sericeus was described by Westwood in 1844 and ranges across Borneo, Sumatra and Java. GBIF records likewise cluster in Indonesia and Malaysia, with none from the Philippines. Besides the nominate form there is the Malaysian subspecies taronii. The epithet means silky, after the sheen of the beetle. Almost nothing has been published about breeding it. It does not appear in the BE-KUWA certified records either; the sericeus listed there belongs to the genus Lucanus. In Japan it circulates chiefly as set specimens, so anyone keeping live stock has to follow the general husbandry used for the genus.

Plant Protection Act: When importing live specimens of Scarabaeoidea (including rhinoceros beetles, stag beetles, flower beetles, etc.), a species identification certificate issued by the exporting country government agency or equivalent must be attached in accordance with the Invasive Species Act (import ports are limited to Narita, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka, and Kagoshima airports). This species itself is not a designated invasive species, and import is possible upon submission of the certificate.

It lives in Sundaland rainforest, so as with other saw stags from the region, avoid extreme heat and keep the substrate from drying out.
Follow the general method for the genus: an egg-laying set of firmly packed, fully fermented substrate.
Males fight hard, so keep them singly. House a pair together only briefly for mating and separate them once it has been seen. Do not mix the species with others.
As with saw stags in general, expect adults to live a few months.
The nominate form and subspecies taronii come from different areas, so do not breed unlabelled stock together. Importing live beetles requires the species identification certificate demanded for live Scarabaeoidea.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The average lifespan of Sericeus Saw Stag Beetle is Adults 2-3 months. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
Sericeus Saw Stag Beetle feeds on: Sap of broadleaf trees; beetle jelly. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
