Mold and Bacterial Contamination of Substrate

About this condition
Proliferation of blue-green molds (such as Trichoderma spp.) or contaminating bacteria in beetle substrate, fungal blocks, or fungal-based rearing material. Can degrade the larval growth environment, leading to reduced feeding and delayed development.
Common symptoms
- Blue, green, or black mold has developed on the surface of fungal blocks or substrate
- Larval feeding marks (frass tunnels) have decreased significantly
- The substrate or fungal block emits a foul or putrid odor
- Larvae come to the walls or surface of the fungal block and refuse to burrow back in
Common causes
- Contaminating fungi (such as Trichoderma spp.) have infiltrated the fungal block or fermented substrate
- Excessive moisture has created conditions favorable to bacterial and mold proliferation
- Excessively high temperatures have accelerated fungal degradation and promoted contamination
- Delayed replacement of fungal blocks has allowed deterioration after larvae exhausted the substrate
Prevention (husbandry & daily care)
Store fungal blocks at an appropriate temperature (approximately 20–23°C) and avoid high heat. Replace fungal blocks promptly when larvae have consumed most of the substrate. Keep fermented substrate at the correct moisture level, refrigerate or seal it after opening, and use it promptly. Always inspect fungal blocks and substrate for signs of contamination before use.
