Nematode Infestation

About this condition

Occurrence of nematodes in the substrate or on the surface of captive beetles. While many nematode species assist in organic matter decomposition, heavy infestations or certain species may negatively affect the beetle's health.

Common symptoms

• Numerous thin white or transparent thread-like organisms are visible throughout the substrate
• Nematodes are attached to the beetle's body surface, especially between abdominal segments
• The adult beetle moves restlessly around the enclosure
• Loss of appetite or reduced activity may be observed

Common causes

• Rapid multiplication of nematodes already present in leaf compost or fermented substrate
• Rapid nematode reproduction driven by high temperature and humidity in the enclosure
• Poor ventilation causing stagnant, humid conditions inside the enclosure
• Introduction of nematodes via wild-caught individuals or collected outdoor materials

Prevention (husbandry & daily care)

Use high-quality commercially prepared fermented substrate and select sealed packaging. Maintain adequate ventilation in the enclosure to prevent excessive heat and humidity. Regularly check that the substrate is not overly wet and prevent condensation buildup. Avoid using unprocessed outdoor materials such as collected leaves or soil of unknown origin.
