About this condition

A condition in which the wings fail to expand properly or the elytra (wing cases) remain twisted or deformed during eclosion from the pupal stage. Pupal chamber integrity and environmental temperature and humidity are major contributing factors.

Common symptoms

  • The elytra are twisted or fail to close completely
  • The hind wings remain exposed outside the body and harden in that position
  • The body appears deformed or the abdomen appears shrunken
  • The beetle stops moving mid-eclosion with remnants of the pupal shell still attached

Common causes

  • Damage to the pupa from pupal chamber collapse or excessive vibration
  • Inappropriate humidity inside the pupal chamber (too dry or too wet)
  • Sudden temperature fluctuations during the pupal stage
  • Physical disturbance to the pupa from substrate changes or excavation

Prevention (husbandry & daily care)

Avoid moving or vibrating the enclosure during the pupal stage. Complete substrate changes before pupation begins. Provide sufficient substrate depth (20 cm or more) to allow natural pupal chamber formation. Maintain stable temperature and humidity during pupation (approximately 25–27°C, 60–70% relative humidity) and avoid sudden environmental changes.
