Lucanus laminifer ranges from India into China and Thailand. The English Wikipedia gives males at about 42-80mm and females at about 38mm, describes the male's long mandibles with small teeth along the inner edge, notes a median and two lateral processes on the head, and records the elytra as black or dark brown, smooth and shining. It favours forest at higher elevations. The Japanese Wikipedia entry for the genus marks it by the short apical inner tooth and the absence of one at the base, and lists three subspecies: the nominate L. l. laminifer from China to India, L. l. vitalisi from Vietnam and Laos, and L. l. lucidulus from Myanmar. Records in GBIF are commonest in India and Thailand and extend to Vietnam, China and Myanmar. It reaches Japan as an imported stag beetle but never in quantity.
