About

Lucanus formosanus is a stag beetle endemic to Taiwan, said to measure 45-80mm. Like others in the family it shows marked sexual dimorphism, and males vary in form with size. The male mandibles differ by locality, falling into northern, central and southern morphs. Its build recalls L. hermani and L. planeti, and it is reckoned relatively close to the Japanese L. ferriei. Records in GBIF cluster in Taiwan. The BE-KUWA 2025 edition registers a captive record of 83.0mm and a wild record of 85.0mm. It reaches Japan as an imported stag beetle.
