About
Crematogaster osakensis is a small acrobat ant found from Sapporo in Hokkaido through Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima, Yakushima, Tanegashima and Amami-Oshima, and abroad in China and the Korean Peninsula. Workers measure 2-3mm and queens about 5mm; the body is yellow to amber. Its habit of raising the gaster over the back gives it the Japanese name. It nests under stones, in soil and in decayed parts of standing trees in grassland and forest, and colonies are polygynous. Alates fly on evenings in September-October and gather at lights, after which large numbers of dealated queens cluster in sheltered spots, a familiar autumn sight. Because so many queens can be obtained then, colonies are easily founded with several queens. It favours sweets in spring and summer and readily takes sugar water or insect jelly in captivity. Common even in cities and tolerant of temperature swings and fasting, it is listed among species suitable for first-time keepers.
