Crematogaster matsumurai is a myrmicine acrobat ant distributed from Hokkaido south of Sapporo through Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Tsushima, and in the Korean Peninsula. Workers measure 2-3.5mm and are yellowish to blackish brown. Because the petiole attaches to the top of the gaster, the ant can curl its gaster over its back like a scorpion's tail, and it releases a pungent venom from the tip against enemies. An arboreal nester, it excavates nests between bark layers and in dead, decayed parts of branches and trunks, never in soil. Its main foods are honeydew from aphids and scale insects and extrafloral nectar. Alates fly from late July to September. Compared with the congeneric C. osakensis it is slightly larger and browner, with a shorter, thicker propodeal spine. Founding colonies can be started in a test tube, but its small size and arboreal habit call for some experience in managing the foraging area and preventing escapes.
