About
For centuries the Sami people used dogs of this type to herd and guard reindeer in northern Finland and Russia; the first standard was set by the Finnish Kennel Club in 1945 and the breed received its current name in 1993. A slightly under-medium-sized dog with a long, dense coat, it is intelligent, brave, calm and docile, and today enjoys great popularity throughout Finland as a companion dog. Its friendly, faithful nature makes it an excellent family dog, though the thick Arctic coat dislikes heat.
