About
Uaru amphiacanthoides occurs along the Amazon-Solimões from the Japurá to the Tapajós and in the middle and lower Negro basin. Adults are yellowish-brown with a large dark blotch, while juveniles look entirely different, speckled with white. FishBase records a maximum of 25cm SL and Seriously Fish 25.4cm, so the sources agree closely. Seriously Fish gives a 120 x 45 x 37.5cm tank (200 litres) for a pair, at 27-30C, pH 6.0-7.0 and soft water up to 5 dGH. Those high temperatures limit which species can share the tank. It is omnivorous in the wild but appears primarily herbivorous in captivity, so blanched vegetables should be offered regularly. It is peaceful for its size and can be combined with tetras, angelfish and eartheaters such as Geophagus and Satanoperca. It spawns on a flat rock or piece of bogwood, and the young feed from the parents' slime coat much as discus fry do.
