Andinoacara rivulatus
A South American cichlid with a metallic blue-green body covered in fine spangles, its dorsal and caudal fins edged in orange to white. As the name suggests it is strongly territorial and is normally kept alone or as a bonded pair.
Andinoacara rivulatus occurs on the Pacific slope from the Esmeraldas River in Ecuador to the Tumbes in Peru. Fine spangles cover a metallic blue-green body, and the dorsal and caudal fins carry an orange to white margin. FishBase records a maximum of 20cm TL, while Seriously Fish gives 30cm SL. Seriously Fish recommends a 150 x 45cm tank (about 304 litres) at 20-24C, pH 6.5-8.0 and 5-25 dGH. It lives up to its name: a single specimen or a mated pair is the usual arrangement, and only in tanks above about 650 litres can it be combined with robust cichlids, large loricariids and other big catfish. It is a substrate spawner, and as many as 400 eggs may be fertilised. These hatch in three to four days, fry are free-swimming after six to eight, and brood care continues for around six weeks.
