Geophagus altifrons is a cichlid of the Amazon basin in Brazil. It belongs to the group known as eartheaters, taking mouthfuls of sand, sifting out food and expelling the sand through the gills. FishBase records a maximum of 26.5cm TL, while Seriously Fish gives 22.5cm SL. Seriously Fish recommends a 180 x 60cm tank (about 648 litres) at 26-32C, pH 4.8-6.6 and 0-5 dGH; the demand for soft water and high temperatures makes it a challenging fish. It is surprisingly peaceful for its size and will not predate on anything larger than a few millimetres. It is gregarious and a group of five to eight or more is recommended. It is an ovophilous biparental mouthbrooder, collecting the eggs after spawning and carrying broods of around 200. At 25-28C the fry become free-swimming at eight to eleven days of age.
