Satanoperca jurupari
A South American eartheater, silver-grey with a pearly sheen, that takes mouthfuls of sand and sifts food from it. Peaceful and gregarious, it is a maternal mouthbrooder.
Satanoperca jurupari ranges widely through the Amazon basin, from Peru, Ecuador and Colombia to the river mouth in Brazil, into Amapá and eastern French Guiana, and across the Bolivian Amazon drainage. It is silver-grey with a pearly sheen and feeds by taking sand into its mouth and sifting out food. FishBase records a maximum of 26cm SL, while Seriously Fish gives 18.5cm. Seriously Fish recommends a 210 x 60cm tank (about 756 litres) at 20-28C, pH 5.5-7.5 and 2-12 dGH. It is surprisingly peaceful for its size and will not predate on fish more than a few millimetres long. It is gregarious and a group of five to eight or more is recommended. It is an ovophilous maternal mouthbrooder that has been bred in aquaria: eggs are deposited in small batches and collected by the female as soon as they are fertilised, with brooding females typically carrying several hundred.
