Heros efasciatus
An Amazonian cichlid with a near-discoid body and yellow-green colouring, marked by dark vertical bars along the flanks. It grows large but is mild-mannered for its size and mixes well with medium-sized South American fish.
Heros efasciatus is a cichlid of the Amazon basin, found in tributaries of the Ucayali in Peru and the Solimões-Amazon in Brazil. It has a near-discoid body in yellow-green to gold, crossed by dark vertical bars. FishBase records a maximum of 17cm SL, while Seriously Fish gives 30cm. Seriously Fish recommends a 120 x 45cm tank (about 243 litres) at 22.2-28.9C, pH 5.5-7.0 and 1-8 dGH, and states the species is not really suitable for tanks smaller than 120 x 45 x 45cm. It is fairly mild-mannered for a cichlid of this size and can share a tank with South American species too large to be eaten. It is omnivorous and unfussy about prepared foods, but vegetable matter such as blanched spinach should also be offered. It spawns on flat surfaces, with both parents guarding eggs and fry. The usual approach is to grow on a group of youngsters and let pairs form naturally.
