Red nose tip and black-white tail distinctive. Most uniform schooling among tetras. Better water quality means brighter red.
The rummy-nose tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri and the closely related H. rhodostomus) is a small characin native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. It is immediately recognizable by its bright crimson nose and boldly striped black-and-white tail fin. Growing to 4–5 cm, rummy-nose tetras are celebrated for forming the most disciplined, cohesive schools of any tetra species — groups of ten or more move in precise unison, creating a mesmerizing display in aquariums. The intensity of the red nose coloration serves as a practical water quality indicator: vibrant red signals good water conditions, while fading indicates deteriorating parameters. Slightly acidic, soft water (pH 6.0–7.0) at 24–28°C is ideal. Peaceful and compatible with virtually all small tropical fish, they accept a varied diet of fine granules, flake food, and frozen foods. Their brilliant two-tone coloring against green plantings makes them one of the most photogenic fish for aquascaping.
