Panaque nigrolineatus
A large pleco with dark longitudinal stripes on a grey ground and red eyes. It is one of the few fishes that can rasp and digest wood, so driftwood is food rather than decoration. Adults exceed 40cm and need a roomy tank with well-oxygenated water.
Panaque nigrolineatus is a large loricariid catfish of Orinoco and Amazon tributaries and the type species of the genus Panaque. It was described in 1877 as Chaetostomus nigrolineatus and moved to the new genus Panaque in 1889. Dark grey longitudinal stripes run over a light grey body, the eyes are red and the dorsal fin is edged with cream or gold. FishBase records 43cm standard length. It is one of the very few fishes able to digest wood, which it does with the help of symbiotic gut bacteria, and it also feeds on algae and roots. FishBase gives pH 6.5-7.5, 2-15dH and 22-26C. It is nocturnal, hides during the day and is territorial, so each fish needs its own resting place. Imported juveniles often arrive undernourished and take dedicated care to recover. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern.

Driftwood, algae, vegetables and sinking vegetable-based wafers
Adults exceed 40cm, so a large footprint is needed. Always include several pieces of softer driftwood and provide one hiding and resting place per fish. Keep the water well oxygenated.
FishBase gives 22-26C, pH 6.5-7.5 and 2-15dH. The wood-based diet produces a great deal of waste, so allow generous filtration and frequent water changes.
Territorial and prone to conflict with its own kind and close relatives. It combines well with midwater species that use a different level. Being nocturnal, it is rarely seen while the lights are on.
It rasps and digests wood. Keep driftwood available at all times and supplement with algae, vegetables and sinking vegetable-based wafers. A diet dominated by meaty foods does not suit it.
Reliable records of captive breeding are scarce. Traded fish are mostly wild caught, and the species is reported to be harvested heavily for the aquarium trade in Colombia.
Newly imported fish are often undernourished and need dedicated feeding and water management. Running out of driftwood readily leads to digestive problems. It is not listed by CITES and the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Royal Pleco is 22〜26℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Royal Pleco is 10-18 years. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
Royal Pleco typically reaches 35-43cm as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
Royal Pleco feeds on: Driftwood, algae, vegetables and sinking vegetable-based wafers. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
