About
Glossolepis incisa is an atheriniform rainbowfish confined to Lake Sentani in Papua, Indonesia. FishBase records 12cm SL for males and 10cm for females, pH 7.6-8.2 and 9-19 dH, and recommends groups of five or more in a tank of at least 100cm. Seriously Fish gives 15cm SL, 22-25C, pH 7.0-8.0, 10-20 dGH and a 120 x 30cm base of about 108 litres, and states that the fish does poorly in soft, acidic water. Only mature males take on the deep red colour, and they develop a much higher back than females. At slightly lower temperatures all males tend to redden, while in warmer water usually only the dominant fish does. Spawning is straightforward: the female attaches a few eggs by fine threads each day over several weeks. Because Lake Sentani is degraded, the IUCN lists the species as Endangered. Most fish in the trade are commercially bred and are said not to match the colour of wild stock.
