About
Dawkinsia denisonii is endemic to rivers of the Western Ghats in India. FishBase records a maximum of 15cm TL, pH 6.8-7.8, 5-25 dH and 15-25C, and describes a largely herbivorous fish that shoals in fast hill streams and rocky pools under thick riparian vegetation. Seriously Fish gives 110mm SL, 15-25C, pH 6.5-7.8, 5-25 dGH and a 120 x 45cm base of about 243 litres, advising groups of six to ten or more. It is marked by a black lateral band and a vivid red stripe on silver, with black and yellow in the caudal fin. It entered the ornamental trade in the late 1990s and became Kerala's largest export during the 2000s, though collection of wild fish is now restricted. The IUCN rates it Endangered. It is not listed by CITES.
