Dimidiochromis compressiceps
A large Lake Malawi haplochromine with an extremely compressed body and pointed snout. It ambushes small fish from among plants, exceeds 23cm and needs a large tank.
Dimidiochromis compressiceps occurs in Lake Malawi as well as the upper Shire River and Lake Malombe. FishBase records a maximum of 23cm TL and Seriously Fish gives 25cm SL. The body is extremely laterally compressed, letting the fish hide among plants in vegetated shallows and ambush small fish. Its recorded diet is small fish, especially shoaling species such as juvenile Utaka. Mature males show blue on the flanks. Fish under about 12cm will be eaten, so tank mates must be chosen with care, and a harem of one male with three to six females is easiest. Use 150 x 38cm (about 257 litres) or more at pH 7.5-8.8, 10-25 dGH and 23-28C. Females mouthbrood for roughly three weeks; breeding is not easy.

Frozen foods such as prawn, mussel and whitebait, plus prepared foods
150 x 38cm (about 257 litres) or larger. It is deep-bodied, so provide depth as well as vertical structures to hide among.
23-28C, pH 7.5-8.8, 10-25 dGH. As a large predator it needs ample filtration and regular water changes.
Fish under about 12cm become prey. Choose Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and keep only one male.
A piscivore that trains readily onto frozen and dried foods. Offer prawn, mussel and whitebait, and do not rely on live prey alone.
A mouthbrooder. Clutches reach up to 250 eggs but are usually 40-100, and the female carries them for about three weeks.
The compressed body dislikes excessive current. Males turn aggressive when breeding, so give females places to retreat. Altolamprologus compressiceps shares the species name but is a Tanganyikan fish of a different genus reaching only about 12cm, far smaller than this one, so do not plan tank size or tankmates from the name compressiceps alone.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
