About
Pelvicachromis pulcher, sold worldwide as the kribensis, is a small cichlid from slow-moving waters of eastern Benin, southern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Males reach about 12.5cm and females about 8cm, with males showing pointed dorsal, pelvic and anal fins (FishBase gives a maximum of 11cm total length). Females are rounder-bodied and flush a vivid purple-red belly when in spawning condition, so they are often the more colourful sex. Care is easy: a pair can be kept in 60x37.5x30cm, about 71 litres, at pH 5.0-7.5, 0-12 dGH and 24-27C. It is a secretive cave spawner, laying 40-100 eggs in rows of about ten in a hole beneath plants, with both parents tending the brood for 21-28 days. Populations introduced through the ornamental trade have established in Hawaii.
