About

Apistogramma agassizii is a dwarf cichlid distributed along the Amazon-Solimoes from Peru through Brazil to the Capim basin. Males reach about 7.5cm standard length and females about 5cm, males being larger, more colourful and longer-finned. The spear-shaped caudal fin is characteristic, and body colour varies greatly by locality, with populations and ornamental forms such as 'Alenquer' traded under A-numbers. A pair can be kept from 60x30cm, about 54 litres, at 22-29C, pH 5.0-7.0 and 0-10 dGH. Wild fish come from extremely acidic blackwater of pH 3-4, while commercially bred stock is far more tolerant. It is largely carnivorous, feeding on benthic invertebrates, so live and frozen Artemia, Daphnia and bloodworm should form the basis of the diet. It is a substrate spawner that lays in crevices and cavities, with the female guarding eggs and fry.
