Dwarf pufferfish
A small freshwater puffer with beautiful leopard pattern. High intelligence, some recognize owners.
The Malabar pufferfish (Carinotetraodon imitator) is a small freshwater puffer native to southwestern India, closely resembling the pea puffer (C. travancoricus) and only recognized as a separate species in 1999. It grows slightly larger at 5–7 cm. Males can be distinguished from pea puffers by the presence of a prominent skin fold (dermal ridge) on the underside of the body. Like all members of its genus, it is highly territorial and aggressive, making community tank keeping extremely problematic — solo keeping or single-species setups are strongly recommended. Water conditions of pH 6.5–7.5 at 24–28°C are appropriate. Diet is carnivorous: frozen bloodworms, live snails, and other small invertebrates are favored; hard foods like snails are necessary to wear down continuously growing teeth. Highly intelligent and curious, Malabar pufferfish respond actively to environmental changes and owner interaction. Wild populations are under pressure from habitat degradation; captive-bred specimens are increasingly preferred by responsible hobbyists.
