About
Opheodrys aestivus, commonly known as the rough green snake, is a nonvenomous North American snake in the colubrid family. It is sometimes called grass snake or green grass snake, but these names are more commonly applied to the smooth green snake. The European colubrid called grass snake is not closely related. The rough green snake is docile, often allowing close approach by humans, and rarely bites. Even when bites occur, they have no venom and are harmless.

Breeding notes
A winter brumation period with gradual reduction of temperature and photoperiod is strongly recommended for breeding success. Incubation duration is highly temperature-dependent: laboratory conditions yielded 22–47 days (Plummer 1990; Aldridge et al. 1990), while field/general captive observations span 5–12 weeks (35–84 days), with at least one record of 81 days under cool temperatures. Females may reach sexual maturity later than males, up to 33 months (Plummer 1985).
