New Caledonian Giant Gecko

The New Caledonian giant gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus) inhabits the tropical forests of New Caledonia and is the largest living gecko. It reaches 35-40 cm (around 43 cm in the biggest localities) and 200-300 g, with large individuals topping 400 g. It has a heavy body in mottled grey, mossy green, and brown camouflage, a broad triangular head, and a short thick tail, living pressed against tree trunks. Color and size vary by locality (Mount Koghis, Nuu Ami, Yate, and others), and many forms are traded. Keep it in a tall 45x45x60 cm+ arboreal enclosure with thick branches at 22-27°C and 50-70% humidity; heat above 30°C is dangerous. It readily takes crested-gecko prepared diets supplemented with insects, so feeding is relatively easy, but it is strong and may bite, so tame it gradually. Like the crested and gargoyle geckos, it is a popular New Caledonian species. It is listed on CITES Appendix II, and because its homeland has banned wild exports since the 1990s, traded animals are mostly captive-bred; import requires CITES paperwork, though no registration is needed to keep or transfer it domestically.
