A nocturnal gecko from Madagascar with leaf-like tail and body perfectly mimicking tree bark.
Leaf-tailed geckos (genus Uroplatus) are a remarkable group of nocturnal geckos endemic to Madagascar, renowned for their extraordinary camouflage. Different species mimic dead leaves (e.g., Uroplatus phantasticus), tree bark (e.g., Uroplatus sikorae), or lichen-encrusted branches. The flattened, leaf-shaped tail of many species is particularly striking. Adults range from about 10 cm in the smallest species to over 30 cm in the largest. All species are listed on CITES Appendix II, and captive-bred individuals are strongly preferred. In captivity, leaf-tailed geckos require tall, humid terrariums with natural-looking cork bark and live plants, cool temperatures of 22–26°C, and high humidity of 80–90%. They are best appreciated as display animals and do not tolerate frequent handling well.
