One of Africa's largest monitors. Many individuals are gentle, relatively manageable among large monitors.
The black-throated monitor (Varanus albigularis microstictus) is one of the largest monitor lizards in Africa, native to East Africa including Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania. Adults can exceed 150–210 cm in total length and weigh over 10 kg. As the name suggests, the throat and underside are dark, contrasting with pale ocelli on the body. Compared to many large monitor species, black-throated monitors are considered relatively manageable; individuals raised from juveniles with regular handling can become quite docile. They are carnivorous and consume a wide variety of prey including rodents, birds, eggs, and invertebrates. Due to their large adult size, minimum enclosure dimensions of 240 × 120 cm or more are required, along with a very high basking spot of around 45°C and a cool side of approximately 28°C.
