Mesotopus tarandus
Africa's largest stag beetle and the sole member of its genus. Its hallmark is a gloss often likened to lacquer, on a broad, heavy body, and the mandibles grip with great force.
Mesotopus tarandus lives in the rainforests from western Africa across to the Congo and is the sole member of its genus. At 46 to 92 mm in males and 36 to 56 mm in females it is the largest stag beetle in Africa, broad-bodied and heavy. The mandibles bend into a shallow V and are solidly built, and their grip is said to exceed that of a large Dorcus titanus. Its hallmark is a strong gloss often likened to lacquer, carried on the underside and on the female as well. The name and the sheen sometimes lead people to take it for an Odontolabis of Southeast Asia, but it belongs to a different lineage. In the male the clypeal region between the mandibles rises in a thick fork, and where that structure points downwards in other stag beetles it points upwards here. Every leg carries two to four sharp spines, a form shared with Lucanus and Chiasognathus. It is not as ready to fight as Dorcus titanus or Hexarthrius, but once a fight starts it presses hard.

The Japanese Wikipedia says only that the substrate should be kept on the dry side and that something in the twenties is considered right, and no figure firm enough to give as a range could be confirmed, so none is given. It is a beetle of the central African rainforest, and the Coriolus medium it is reared on degrades quickly.
Rearing the adults was never the problem, but breeding the larvae was long considered difficult until it emerged that, as with Allotopus, the beetle lays into Coriolus or Ganoderma logs and into Coriolus medium, and that the larvae grow readily in Coriolus mycelium bottles. With the right materials it is now fairly easy to keep. The captive record of 98.0 mm exceeds the wild record of 93.0 mm.
It will fight not only its own kind but other stag beetles and even Augosoma centaurum, and usually overwhelms anything smaller or weaker. Both sexes grip very hard, so the beetles are never housed together and handling calls for care.
The larvae grow in Coriolus mycelium bottles, but the medium degrades quickly and needs watching. Once past the early stages the larvae are hardy. The adults live a few months.
When provoked it vibrates its head and produces a sound between head and thorax. The related M. regius is often treated as a synonym or a subspecies of this beetle, so the two should not be crossed or housed together. Importing live Scarabaeoidea requires the species identification certificate.
