Odontolabis femoralis
A large Odontolabis with yellow-tinged wing cases and vivid red legs, and some red on the middle of the head as well. Those red legs give it a second Japanese name. It occurs on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.
Odontolabis femoralis is a large Odontolabis of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, with the subspecies waterstradti on Borneo and palawanicus on Palawan besides the nominate form. The wing cases are washed with yellow and the legs are a vivid red, which is what its second Japanese name refers to, and the middle of the head carries some red as well. The Palawan subspecies is known from a single male holotype and has blackened elytra. As throughout the genus the male's mandibles fall into short, intermediate and long-toothed forms, and which one appears is said to depend partly on the temperature during the prepupal stage. The larvae live in humus formed as broadleaf wood rots down close to soil, hollowing out a jar-shaped chamber that they hold as territory, attacking and sometimes eating insects of their own or other species that enter it. Neither adults nor larvae tolerate cold well. The captive records stand at 92.2 mm for the nominate form and 91.9 mm for Bornean stock.

Odontolabis adults and larvae alike tolerate cold poorly and are said to be unable to survive a winter on mainland Japan or further north. Do not let the substrate dry out.
The larvae feed on humus formed where broadleaf wood has rotted down close to soil. For the genus, spent substrate mixed with the remains of mycelium, or nitrogen-rich rhinoceros-beetle substrate, is used for the larvae, and red-rotted flake is used for the species that are hard to breed. One to two years pass between hatching and pupation.
Male Odontolabis are for the most part short-tempered and combative, the large species especially so, and a male will sometimes kill a female he does not take to, so several are never kept together and each beetle is housed alone. The larvae too hold their chamber as territory and attack intruders, so they are reared separately.
For the genus, one to two years pass between hatching and pupation and the adults live a few months. Beetles that have been active for about a month and a half are said to start losing tarsi and antennal segments to necrosis at an increasing rate.
Besides the nominate form there are subspecies on Borneo and Palawan, and stock from different regions should not be mixed. Importing live Scarabaeoidea requires the species identification certificate. Odontolabis larvae compete strongly with other species, so the beetles must never be released or abandoned outdoors.
