Phyllium giganteum
One of the largest leaf insects, found on the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Females reach almost 12 cm and closely resemble a partly withered leaf. In captivity the species reproduces parthenogenetically, and newly hatched nymphs are easily lost to dry air.
Pulchriphyllium giganteum, long known as Phyllium giganteum, is one of the largest leaf insects and lives in the tropics of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Males reach 8.2 cm and females almost 12 cm. Females lack hindwings and their forewings do not cover the abdomen out to its lateral margins, while males have hindwings reaching the tip of the abdomen and turn increasingly yellow three to four weeks after the final moult. Both sexes carry a pair of eyespots on the fifth abdominal segment, and their colour and shape closely match a partly withered leaf. Observations in captivity show parthenogenetic reproduction, with one male reported among the offspring of every 20 to 500 females. The glossy dark eggs are 8.5 mm long, 4 mm wide and average 34 mg, the largest and heaviest of any leaf insect, and hatch after six to eight months. Nymphs are reddish brown at first and turn green once they begin to feed. Seven to twelve months pass between hatching and adulthood. Cultured stock traces back to the Cameron Highlands and the adjoining Tapah Hills, and the Phasmid Study Group lists the species as PSG 72.

Hold the enclosure at 22 °C or more, 25-33 °C during the day, with humidity around 70-80 %. Newly hatched nymphs are very delicate and die quickly if those conditions are not kept precisely. Avoid spraying the insects themselves and raise humidity by wetting the leaves instead.
The species reproduces parthenogenetically in culture, though males appear rarely even in purely parthenogenetic stocks. Females start laying about four weeks after the final moult, simply dropping up to seven eggs a week onto the floor. The eggs are 8.5 mm long, 4 mm wide and average 34 mg, and hatch after six to eight months.
The insects are leaf feeders and do not attack one another, so they can be kept together. Wild individuals are mostly female and cultures likewise consist chiefly of parthenogenetic females. Males reach adulthood after only four moults and are short-lived, so the window for pairing them is narrow if sexual breeding is the aim.
Eggs hatch after six to eight months and a further seven to twelve months pass before adulthood. Adult females live six to ten months. Males become adult after four moults and live only a few weeks, at most three months. Plan for a generation to take more than a year.
Trim the dried edges from leaves offered to small nymphs. Foreign phasmids count as quarantine pests under Japan's Plant Protection Act and live specimens may not be imported except with ministerial permission, so choose animals bred within Japan. They must never be released or abandoned outdoors.
