Medauroidea extradentata
A wingless stick insect from Vietnam. Females reach 110 mm and males 75 mm, and the species also reproduces parthenogenetically. It can be kept at room temperature and its ease of culture has made it both a common beginner's species and a feeder insect.
Medauroidea extradentata lives in the tropical forests of Vietnam and takes its name from Annam in the centre of the country. Females reach 110 mm and males 75 mm; females carry two small backward-pointing horns above the eyes and have shorter antennae and a stouter body than males. The ground colour is grey-brown to beige, with dark brown or green individuals appearing occasionally, and neither sex has wings. The insects are nocturnal, avoid unnecessary movement by day and walk with a side-to-side rocking gait that imitates a twig moving in the wind. They mate readily where males are present and otherwise reproduce parthenogenetically. Nymphs are about 15 mm at hatching and mature in three to four months. First brought to Europe in 1949, the species is easy to keep and has become both a popular terrarium insect and a model organism in biological research.

Room temperature is enough even for breeding. Egg development depends on temperature, taking well under two months at 25-27 °C and up to six months below room temperature. Unlike many stick insects this species cannot get all its water from its food and needs to drink, so mist the leaves thoroughly every evening; that also keeps the humidity up.
They mate often when males are present and otherwise reproduce parthenogenetically. Laying begins about two weeks after the final moult, with one to five eggs dropped to the floor each day and up to a thousand over a lifetime. The barrel-shaped eggs are 2.5 by 1.5 mm, grey with brown flecks and capped with a black knob on the operculum. A layer of damp sand or soil lets the eggs stay where they fall until hatching, and pale sand or small stones make them easy to spot.
They feed on leaves and do not attack one another, so a group shares one enclosure without trouble; about 40 x 40 x 60 cm is a useful size. When disturbed, males in particular can run surprisingly fast for a stick insect, so watch for escapes when cleaning or feeding.
Eggs hatch after three to four months on average and the nymphs need another three to four months to mature, moulting five times in males and six in females; laying starts about two weeks after the final moult. Animals live up to a year in culture. Generations are short and numbers climb quickly, so allow for more containers than the starting group needs.
The species is also sold in Japan under a trade name meaning 'Indian stick insect', but it lives in Vietnam and does not occur in India. A handled insect may shed a leg, which regrows over one or two moults. Foreign phasmids count as quarantine pests under Japan's Plant Protection Act and live specimens may not be imported except with ministerial permission, so choose animals bred within Japan. Because eggs are produced daily and in quantity, take care that neither eggs nor insects escape outdoors.
