Elegant toy dog with butterfly-like ears. One of the smartest small breeds, excels in training and dog sports.
The Papillon, also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog of the spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toy spaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of the long and fringed hair on the ears. A Papillon with dropped ears is called a Phalène. The breed appears frequently in paintings of European royalty from the 16th and 17th centuries. Papillons are highly intelligent and among the most trainable of small breeds, regularly excelling in dog sports such as agility and obedience. They are lively, friendly, and adaptable, with a silky, flowing coat that is predominantly white with colored patches.
