The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was developed in the early 19th century on the Nova Scotia peninsula to lure and retrieve waterfowl: playing and darting along the shoreline after sticks or balls thrown by a hidden hunter, its antics draw curious ducks within gunshot range before it retrieves the fallen birds. A powerful, compact medium-sized dog in shades of red or orange, usually with white markings, it is highly intelligent, patient and trainable, a strong swimmer with an intense retrieving drive that needs plenty of daily activity.
